The New York Public Library put together a great map showing which branches have re-opened after the storm. Still unbelievable to see that all the Manhattan branches south of 34th are closed. These guys are troopers - the data center with their catalog, circulation system, and web servers still has no power, but they’ve re-directed their domain to a temporary page and have 65 branches back open as places to “get computer access, power, free programming, and a chance to talk with neighbors.”

Troopers indeed.

“The Gift of Asher Lev,” by Chaim Potok
Borrow I Read
I asked him for the shot and he said sure; he asked me to send him the picture. After he gave me his address, he went back to reading. Suddenly he looked up again and he said, “You know what I do with books on the subways? When I’m done reading them, I bring them here and I leave them all around for other people to find.” He stood up as his stop was approaching, and he continued, “It’s like my own kind of library. My own Underground Library.” I stared at him at that moment. I wanted to say hey! That I have my own kind of underground library too. I worried though, that I wouldn’t have enough time to fully explain, and that my quick words would just be absurd. So I let it go. I watched as he put out books before getting off the train, and I felt grateful, for the moment, for this man, and for the meeting.

Today at 10 a.m., NYPL will officially open its beautiful new Kingsbridge Library, which is nearly double the size of its predecessor. It features an outdoor garden, the NYPL’s first green roof, nearly 40 public access computers, wi-fi and over 20,000 collection items. The community has long outgrown the previous building and has been eagerly awaiting their new space, so there is plenty of excitement around this opening. So if you’re free, come on out for the ceremony and a day of programming, including crafts, face-painting, a lecture by a historian, a talk with author Steven Torres and more. Plus, refreshments will be served throughout the day, including pizza and cupcakes donated by local businesses Bari Pizzeria and Restaurant and Leila’s Hand-Dipped Chocolate. So come celebrate! Here’s more information and a schedule - hope to see you!

Want to do something fun tonight AND get something free AND hang out with our lions AND see our LEGO lions AND help save the Library from the worst proposed city budget cut in our history? Then download this letter to the City Council, print 25 copies, get them all signed and bring them to our Stephen A. Schwarzman Building on 42nd Street and Fifth Avenue tonight between 5 and 7. In exchange for your 25 letters, you get a copy of the limited edition book “Know The Past, Find The Future,” and can take a photo with our lions (which may show up on our Facebook page). You’ll also be able to check out our LEGO lions, created by amazing artist Nathan Sawaya. So come on down! We want to see you! PHOTO BY SEAN CHRISTOPHER
