Last year Charlotte, NC slashed public library funding, closing libraries and laying off librarians. Now they are on to school libraries. Charlotte-Mecklenburg County is not the place to be a librarian these days, but is unfortunately a good example of what is happening in cities and communities around the country.
“Help a Librarian (HAL) unities librarians from all over the world to help each other answer questions, share knowledge and enhance cultural understanding.”
This is perhaps once of the best defenses of public libraries I have read; David Morris easily blends modern day dilemmas and lofty ideals to create a manifest that asserts to be American we do not just need libraries—but public ones.
